My grandmother Carmen was more Spanish than castanets. I grew up under her umbrella of nostalgia: Madrid, Madrid, oh, Madrid.

I remember her telling me terrible stories about uncle Perendejo (a Bogeyman-type character she invented). Thunder scared her to death. She would sing traditional Spanish songs to me—but only halfway through. The songs told stories of medieval maidens and wandering knights. I never did find out how these songs ended because my grandmother would only hum the second half.
